HALCYON DRIVE • Saturday 12th September

Born from two sides of suburban Melbourne, Halcyon Drive comprises of guitarist/vocalist Michael Oechsle and drummer Max Pamieta. Drawing on influences from upbringings on the classics, through to more recent side projects in electronic music and mathcore, comparisons are often drawn to current acts as diverse as Foals, Bon Iver and Kings of Leon.

Halcyon Drive’s debut EP Cruel Kids is ushered in by the release of new single Crusoe. Cruel Kids encapsulates the year that has been for Halcyon Drive; spent playing countless live shows and recording a handful of fresh alt- pop tunes, including previous releases Whitewash and Apart.

Lead single Crusoe embodies all that is Halcyon Drive; full of trademark falsetto-pop melodies and elevating dynamic twists. Recorded and produced by Steven Schram (San Cisco, Eagle and the Worm) in the humble backstreets of Northcote and mastered by Brian Lucey (Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys), Crusoe again shows another side of the young duo’s evolving sound; packing a thriving backbeat and summery vibes.

“debut EP, Cruel Kids, which appears as one of the more engaging guitar-based releases of Australian music this year. It’s engagement lies in the fact that it unashamedly merges pop hooks with a mixture of garage rock and indie pop. Currently it is seen as uncool to embrace ‘pop’ but where the problem actually lies in artists that suddenly became popular because… Surprise, they make music that is accessible”. pilerats.com

Halcyon Drive’s unique live shows are littered with experimental loop extensions and shape-shifting dual drumming jams that freshly interpret the recorded material for a live context. The year saw the lads support Panama on their national tour at a sold out Northcote Social Club, local gurus Sons of Rico, touring bands Louis London and Jesse Davidson, and Lime Cordiale at Bondi’s Beach Road Hotel.
