After months of intensive pre-production, a whirlwind recording session with legendary producer John Merchant and a year’s worth of perfecting their sounds in post production, Cheap Fakes are now ready to drop their highly-anticipated record, Modern Vintage on October 9th. Celebrating the release of their third studio album, the Brisbane 6-piece are playing Solbar on 16th October.
Modern Vintage is an aptly titled record that brings a modern approach to a classic brass-fuelled funk sound. As expected, with the magic touch of John Merchant (Michael Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, Bee Gees, Barbra Streisand) the production on the record is world class and is truly matched by impressive performances by the band. Merchant uses his experience to capture the essence of the band’s energetic live performance creating 14 songs ranging from 3:15 hook-filled tracks like Just In Case to progressive jam’s such as Sweet Suit.
The influence that John Merchant had on Modern Vintage can not only be heard in the production but also in the structure of the songs themselves. This is a result of an ongoing relationship between Merchant and the band that first began at an Australian music conference in 2013. Merchant was instantly drawn to Cheap Fakes’ sound and was especially impressed by Andrews unique vocal delivery. Then, after months of pre-production and many long Skype calls, Merchant made himself available to fly back (between sessions with Barbra Streisand) to record Modern Vintage out of pure passion and a belief in the band’s sound.
